Travelling with Firearms

Airlines
All airlines require firearms to be unloaded and contained in a locked case. Ammunition must be carried in a container separate to those containing firearms. Magazines must not be kept within the locked case containing the firearm.

If travelling with QANTAS, either Internationally or Domestically, an “Approval to carry sporting weapons and ammunition” must be obtained. This may be obtained by emailing Dangerous Goods Operations at lwilloughby@qantas.com.au

Please check with your airline regarding their requirements for ammunition limits, but it is our experience that most airlines will limit each person to 5kg’s (11 pounds) of ammunition in their luggage.

Tiger Airlines currently doesn't allow you to travel with firearms or ammunition.

USA
Please check with the ATF/NRA (http://www.nraila.org/GunLaws/) for recommendations when travelling within the USA.
Please check the airline (website) you wish to travell on for information/requirements when taking a firearm with you.

Permits For Importing / Exporting Firearms
Australian Customs requires both an export and import permit to be obtained prior to travelling overseas.
The import permit is known as a B709D and the form is available from your state Firearms Registry.
Victoria - B709D form available here:
NSW - B709D form available here:

The export of firearms, parts, accessories and ammunition of all kinds is controlled under Regulation 13E of the Customs (Prohibited Exports) Regulations 1958 (the Regulations). Under the Regulations you are required to obtain a written permission to export, of which there are two types.
Provided you wish to export less than four low-risk firearms, you may obtain a Restricted Goods Permit (RGP) in order to export your firearm/s.
RGPs are issued by Australian Customs Officers on behalf of the Department of Defence.

In order to obtain an RGP you must complete the following documents:
1. Form B319 "Registering as a Client in the Integrated Cargo System." This is a Customs form which can be found here:
http://www.customs.gov.au/webdata/resources/files/CMR_20040722_Registering_as_client_ICS1.pdf
2. Form DEC07 "Restricted Goods Permit" (RGP). This is a Department of Defence form which can be found here:
Please note that you must show your firearms license and registration papers to Customs with this form.
3. Form B957 "Export Declaration." This is a Customs form and can be found on the Customs website here:
It must be presented to Customs with 100 points of ID e.g. passport and drivers licence/shooters licence.

You can take all this paperwork to a Customs office for processing before you leave. But the RGP cannot be authorised more than 28 days before leaving. DO NOT take your firearms into any Customs office other than the airport on the day of your departure.

The firearms must be seen and verified by Customs at the Customs Client Services Office on departure for an RGP to be valid. If you are taking a domestic flight first please check with the airline to ask if the firearms will be available for Customs inspection at the airport of departure from Australia.
You can also do everything at the airport on the day of departure but please allow at least an additional hour for this (or more if you are travelling with others) on top of the check in time required by your airline.

If further information is required, you may email Australian customs at: cpractweapons@customs.gov.au

USA Import Permit
In order to enter the USA, you will need an import permit, which can be obtained from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF). This form must be accompanied by a letter if invitation from the NRA, inviting you to attend the competition. The letter of invitation can be obtained from Tom Hughes of the NRA via email bianchicup@nrahq.org.

The ATF form 6NIA (5330.3d) can be downloaded here
It is best to fax the form to the ATF on 0011 1 304 6164554.

They can take up to 6–12 weeks in busy times, but during January it is our experience that it takes about 2 weeks.

Note: when arriving in the US they generally do not ask to see this form, but it is a requirement to carry it with you, when travelling with the firearms throughout the United States.
